These range in design from Plains Indians to tribes of the Southwest and our own Northwest Coast Peoples. Most designs are painted in stain and glaze. Some have an incised outline as well. All interior glazes are suitable for handling food and are available in light blue, medium blue, green mottled, black, ivory, sand, teal and brown mottled. Most bowls range in size from 3 1/2 inches to 4 inches high by eight to nine inches in diameter. A foot is added on the wheel, then leaves are impressed into clay and added over all the exterior. Voids are filled with berries and vine tendrils. The rim follows the natural contours of the leaves. To get this mottling and coloration in the glaze, the pot must be fired four times or more. Although this pot makes a great presentation or centerpiece, it can also be used in the microwave oand oven and cleaned up in the dishwasher. All glazes are food safe. No two pots are the same because of the nature of using natural leaves and because they are all hand-built creations. Approximate size is 7 high by 11 inches in diameter. The construction method is the same - lots of hand building and slab work with a little touch of a wheel-thrown foot. The leaf and berry motif is a favorite of mine -- reflecting my love of organic, natural forms. If we bring the leaves inside to enjoy, they soon wither and dry out. So why not do it this way? Leaf Plate Leaf Plate Close-up Leaf Plate Detail The plates are made in much the same way as the leaf bowls. Clay is formed into a slab, and impressions are taken of real leaves. A twisted vine or branch forms the handle, and berries and tendrils add more detail. Just like the real thing, these leaves have curving, undulating edges. These can readily be used for hor d'ourves, snacks or sandwiches. (I use mine to roast brie.) Dishwasher, oven and microwave-safe. Sizes differ based on the size and type of leaf used. Light Blue Oval Pot Light Blue Oval Pot Light Blue Oval Pot Detail These are molded and then embellishments are added. The one shown is a light blue glaze with a sculpted flower. The shallow form is great for floating flowers or candles as well as for serving food. These are available in light blue, medium blue, black, ivory, brown mottled, sand, green mottled and teal.
